Karim Kumba Yannah

Hard work and determination leads to success. Kumba Yannah who was born in Kailahun district Sierra Leonegrew up in a catholic home by Mr. & Mrs. Henry K. Karim. She is the third child of seven. Cultivation was a normal practice by her parents and they used to have plots of land where cassava intercropping with maizegroundnut and vegetables were grown especially during the raining season.
She had her primary and secondary school education in the Southern Provinces of Sierra Leoneshe earned her Bachelors in Agricultural education and Master in crop Science at the Njala University Sierra Leone. After graduationshe was fortunate to get a scholarship under the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to study Plant Breeding (Agronomic) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Kumasi Ghana (KNUST) for her second Master degreeher master thesis topic was on genetic characterisation of cassava. Kumba work in the crop improvement division with the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI) - Njala Agricultural Research Center (NARC) as a Research officerHaving worked over the years on diversity study on cassavagroundnut and potato. As Sierra Leone approaches self-sufficiency in the production of cassava her focus now she saidis to help my country. For her PhDkumba will embark on improving and identifying desirable genes that are related to high yieldhigh dry matter and starch content from cassavaone of the major crops of Africaand introgression of this genes into farmer preferred varieties.It was a great joy for kumba when she received the news that she had been admitted to the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI)University of Ghanafor a 4-year study leading to the award of a PhD degree in Plant Breeding. For kumbabeing admitted into this programme was a great blessing and opportunity to contribute to the process of reducing hunger in Sierra Leone and subsequentlyWest Africa.
